Library Database Search Tips

How to search with library databases

1. USE KEYWORDS: databases can't understand questions or sentences. Distill your questions/ideas into a few simple keywords.

2. USE QUOTATION MARKS: Need to search a concept like "climate change" or "criminal justice" make sure you put quotes around those terms to tell the database that you want it to give you results with those terms.

3. USE AND/OR/NOT: to specify, expand, or narrow your search results use the Boolean Operators AND/OR/NOT between your keywords and concepts.  Here is what each tells the database.

AND narrows your search. It tells the database your results MUST include all keywords/concepts between the word AND.

OR expands your search: It tells the database to give you results with all the keywords or concepts provided.  Use it for synonyms

NOT eliminates parts of your search: It tells the database you do NOT want the keyword or concept that follows NOT.   Use it if you get irrelevant results.
