Welcome to the citations page of library research.
Almost every paper and project you do at Prep will require citations, so I hope this helps you navigate the process.
Are you using AI sites for research? Here are a couple of things to remember.
1. Any information you find on AI AND use in your paper or projects MUST be cited. NoodleTools has steps to help you with this:
2. Some AI's let you input articles to retrieve AI generated summaries. However, inputting articles from subscription sources like the NYT, The Atlantic and any library database is A VIOLATION OF COPYRIGHT LAW. Don't do it.
What Citation Styles are you likely to see in college/university?
MLA: Most often used at Prep. Click to see and follow the example of sample papers written in MLA format with in text citations and a works cited page
Prep Library currently has book guides to MLA and Chicago Manual Style for reference use.
You may have heard that information which is considered "Common Knowledge" does NOT need to be cited in projects and papers but, what is common knowledge?
Common Knowledge: Information that an average, educated person would know without having to look it up. It can vary depending on the expertise of people, so if you are in any doubt you can ask your librarian, your teacher, or include a citation.
Examples of Common Knowledge
1. There are 365 days in a year
2. The Earth revolves around the sun.
3. Abraham Lincoln was president during the U.S Civil War.
4. Washington D.C is the capital of the United States of America.
5. Water is made up of 2 hydrogen molecules and 1 oxygen molecule.
6. U.S Presidents serve 4 year terms.
